Navigating Postpartum Anxiety

Having a baby is one of life’s greatest joys and it can also bring a wave of new responsibilities and worries. Postpartum anxiety is a normal and common response to the changes that come along with motherhood. It’s important to recognize the signs of postpartum anxiety and address it in healthy ways. Here are some key tips for navigating postpartum anxiety:

  1. Acknowledge your feelings – It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, scared, or anxious during this time; don’t be afraid to acknowledge these feelings and talk about them with your support network or helping professionals.

  2. Practice self-care – Taking care of yourself should always be your top priority in order to manage any stress you may be feeling; focus on getting sleep, practicing mindful meditation, eating nutritious meals, moving your body regularly, and taking breaks throughout the day when you can.

  3. Connect with other moms – Feeling connected with other moms who understand what you’re going through can provide an invaluable support system which reduces isolation and promotes mental wellbeing; search online for local mom groups or events, ask your providers, and reach out to family & friends who have been through similar experiences.

  4. Seek professional help – If your symptoms persist or start interfering with your daily life, it might be time to consult a therapist or psychologist who can offer further guidance on how best to cope with postpartum anxiety--don't be afraid to ask for help if needed.

  5. Establish boundaries – Setting boundaries around when/how much work needs doing helps prevent burnout—let people know what you are & aren't capable of handling so no one expects too much from you—this goes for parenting as well--it's ok not to do everything perfectly! Give yourself grace during this transition period & remind yourself that everything will eventually fall into place.
